Few readers realize many authors never receive royalties if they were paid an advance. They never "earn out."
Steve Harrison’s newsletter provides video trailers on becoming bestsellers by John Gray, author of Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus, Jack Canfield of Chicken Soup for the Soul fame, and Robert Kiyosaki, author of Rich Dad, Poor Dad. John Gray commented that only 100,000 of the millions of authors have become bestsellers. Many websites offer ideas on how to accomplish that standing. Each author above described requirements of a lot of work and good knowledge of marketing and promotion.
My goal never included being a bestseller. That said, I’d like to reap some reward – mostly, that readers like my books while learning something about artists and art. My mission embraces teaching readers how to look at art, really see it, enjoy it more, and take away tools to use when viewing art in the future.
To promote, I read books/articles, network with other authors, approach businesses, participate in book signings, seek speaking engagements, and more, but still find myself asking, “How can I gain more attention for my books and be a better seller?”
Answers vary from using social media to starting long before one writes their book. Too late for that one! Another suggestion relates to videos because they increase SEO (Search Engine Optimization).
I hired a videographer to make a forthcoming short film for my website, YouTube, and social media sites. I viewed videos on author Amy Krouse Rosenthal’s website, http://www.whoisamy.com/. Most last under three minutes and that is my goal. Amazingly, a lot of information fills that short amount of time. My TV appearances packed more information than I thought possible into approximately three minutes.
I’m hoping the video brings more traffic to my website and more attention to my books. I’ll post the launch soon.
