Word For The Year

Post by Kerrie Flanagan

At my writers group last week we were talking about our writing goals for 2011. One member of our group boldly stated that she doesn't have any, instead she has a word (or theme) for the year. For 2011, her word is Connect. She wants to grow her freelance and website business, so to do that, she is going to focus on connecting  with other people and businesses.

We all loved this idea of a word for the year, so we switched our focus from goals to thinking about our own words. One member said her word will be Finish. She has many unfinished projects that she wants to complete. Another member said his word is going to be Try. He is going to keep trying to get an agent or publisher for his book and keep trying to get his short stories and essays published.

My word is going to be Dream. I like to think big and this year I have some big dreams for my own writing and for Northern Colorado Writers. I am not quite ready to share these Dreams of mine, but I will when the time is right.

What is your word for the year?

I pick - BELIEVE. The power of the universe, my own ability as a writer/mother/wife/person, the infinite realm of possibility.

A friend of mine picked the word FOCUS and I thought that was wonderful since I'm so easily distracted. But I think I'm going with BRAVE. (Except for today, when I'm going with WARM. It's hard to do any work when your feet are cold!)

My word? ORGANIZE. Clean up the mess around me (aka my office). Oh, I might even write something in between the revising.

I've been doing Word for the Year since 2009, choosing a word to direct and guide my life for the year, not just my writing. However, I love the idea of a word for my writing. I choose the word ADVENTURE. This year I will look at writing as an adventure; exciting and full of possibilities.

Some really inspiring words have been picked. I think mine will be ENJOY. I want to remind myself to enjoy every aspect of my life. Of course, that includes the writing process and all that goes with it.

Finish. For sure. Kerrie, your Writing Planner is awesome - I'm loving it.

Well, I like FINISH because I too have several projects I want to complete. And ORGANIZE because I've just had a huge house move and then house fire, so I still have a garage full of boxes.

And for my personal self, the word is (as it has tried to be for years) SOLITUDE. I am making more time for myself all alone. I never get enough alone time and I need that more every year.

Wow! These are all great words. Thanks for sharing. Carol, I am so glad you are enjoying the writing planner.

I like ORGANIZE, and I am working on that, but even better for me would be DISCONNECT. I need to get off the Internet and write, revise, develop a query schedule, etc.

This is such a great question, and it really made me think. Any and all of the words already mentioned apply to me, but after a great deal of consideration, I've decided that my word for the year is EXCITE.

Sorry, I got so excited, I posted it twice :-)

Jenny, you crack me up! Pat-never thought of Disconnect as a positive thing, but in this case it is. :-)

FOCUS is my word for the year. It's time to put my writing front and center, and not let other minor things disperse my focus.

My word is PROMOTE. I need to discover more ways to promote my new book. The publisher promotes but I found they really like it when the author also promotes.

I guess the first way to promote is to have my name a link. Let's see if I can achieve that task!!
