Wreck This Journal

A few days ago for Christmas, I gave my husband, two teenage children and myself a copy of the book, Wreck This Journal, by Keri Smith. Each page has an activity to do with the journal, but this is not your average journal. As the title explains, these activities are meant to wreck the journal. For example: poke holes in this page, sew this page, rub this page with dirt, tear this page out and crumple it, and tear our your favorite page and give it to someone else. Basically, it's consumable.

The whole book is an exercise in creativity and letting go. You have to be able to let go of perfect white pages in a book, let go of the idea that possessions are priceless, let go of the idea that all art must look a Renoir and all writing should resemble Jane Austin. This book is about the creative process. It is about the journey and the experience--not the end result.

My vision when I bought the books was to have each of us do at least one page a day over the winter break while the kids were out of school and then touch base at dinner each night. I had high hopes that the whole family would enjoy wrecking their journal and my challenge of a page a day.

The truth is, I was wrong. They didn't just enjoy their new interactive "toy," they got excited about it and were doing page after page after page. And I must admit, I was, and still am, caught up the the "Wreck This Journal" frenzy that is going on at our house. I have burnt, ripped, colored and doodled in my journal and can't wait to do more.

Here are some photos of our first couple days of fun.

Here is Delaney chewing a page.

Here we are burning a page (notice we are over the sink)

Here is my husband holding a pen in his mouth to write and drinking from a funnel created with one of the pages.

We are having so much fun that once a week I plan to share with you how our wrecking process is going. If you want a great activity to do with your family or friends, I highly recommend getting "Wreck This Journal."

If you already have one, please share with me what you have been doing with yours.

Happy Wrecking!

Leave it to you, Kerrie, to come up with something so innovative. You knock my socks off! Happy Wrecking!

I too picked up this hilarious journal and I've since fallen in love with it. Charles at Reader's Cove mentioned it several weeks ago, and then showed it to me. Once you look inside, you can't leave it on the shelf. I am so darned envious of the person who put it together, Keri Smith, what a genius!

I took it to physical therapy one day to make some entries while my foot was connected to the weird electric thing for 30 minutes. But when I took the book out and shared some of the instructions with the staff, not only did everyone fall down laughing, I laughed so hard myself that I totally dislodged the carefully attached set of electrical pads that were taped all over my foot!
